The Secret to High-Scoring Essays: Vocabulary

Why is vocabulary so important?

Many students rely on the same words over and over again: good, bad, nice, happy...

While these words are correct, they often limit a student's ability to express their ideas clearly and impressively.

Strong vocabulary helps students:

✔️ Write more sophisticated and engaging responses

✔️ Express ideas with greater precision

✔️ Improve reading comprehension

✔️ Stand out in NAPLAN, Scholarship Examinations, and school assessments

So how can students expand their vocabulary?

1. Read regularly 📖

Books, articles, and magazines expose students to new words in context and help them understand how those words are used.

2. Keep a vocabulary journal ✏️

Whenever you encounter an unfamiliar word, write it down along with its meaning and an example sentence.

3. Learn synonyms 🔄

Instead of always using "good", try:

  • excellent

  • outstanding

  • remarkable

  • exceptional

💡 Remember: vocabulary growth isn't about memorising long word lists. It's about learning to use a wider range of words naturally and effectively.
